Safeguarding life and property is one of the most important core responsibilities for police officers. During the small hours of January 9, two officers of Lantau South Division (LTSDIV) displayed considerable courage and composure when they rescued two persons who were trapped in an over-turned and burning car.

While Sergeant Ng Wing-kin and Senior Police Constable Tse Kwok-piu of LTSDIV were on board their mobile patrol car driving along the South Lantau Road, they saw a private car had over-turned and was on fire, with two persons trapped inside.

After assessing the situation, Mr Ng and Mr Tse quickly reported the incident to the Command and Control Centre to request for support. Meanwhile, they grabbed the fire extinguisher from the mobile patrol car and put out the fire. Both officers then worked together to free a female passenger who was trapped in the front of the car. The officers provided calming reassurance to the woman who was obviously distressed. Afterwards, the officers worked together with fire services personnel to rescue the male driver, who was also trapped.

After the incident, Mr Ng and Mr Tse held an experience sharing session with LTSDIV colleagues, where they reminded their colleagues of the importance of remaining calm and composed when dealing with critical and dangerous situations. The officers also stressed the importance of teamwork, clear communication, and mutual cooperation with other emergency services personnel. The courage and decisive actions of these two officers have been recognised by the senior management of New Territories South Region, who praised them for saving the lives of two citizens.
