The Family Conflict and Sexual Violence Policy Unit of the Crime Support Group held a closing ceremony to conclude the seven-week “Let’s T.A.L.K.” Child Protection Campaign at the Police Sports and Recreation Club on November 27.

Officiating guests of the ceremony included three campaign ambassadors, Chairperson of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, Mr Bernard Chan; the President of the Hong Kong Poverty Alleviation Association, Mr Karson Choi; and former Mainland diving athlete cum Olympic gold medalist, Ms Guo Jingjing; as well as Commissioner Siu Chak-yee; Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Yuen Yuk-kin; Director of Crime and Security Chow Yat-ming; and Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Yip Wan-lung.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner said the campaign aimed to raise public awareness of child protection and enhance the mental health of carers of children. Subsequently, it could facilitate the creation of harmonious families and thus reduce the number of child abuse cases. He noted that with the concerted efforts of the community, the number of child abuse cases decreased from 381 cases in the second quarter to 300 cases in the third quarter, representing a drop of more than 20 per cent. Nevertheless, he stressed that protecting children is everyone’s responsibility and concerted efforts are crucial in enhancing child protection work. He appealed to members of the public to carry on the vision of the campaign so that children can grow in an environment full of care and love.

Under the campaign, the “One-stop Child Protection Web Application” (www.ChildProtection.gov.hk) was launched to share child protection related information. In addition, guests from different professional sectors were invited to a thematic seminar to explore ways to prevent child abuse cases.

Two competitions were also organised to raise public awareness of child protection and foster parent-child relationships. The “Jumping Jacks Challenge Video Clip Contest” and the “Parent-child Colouring and Slogan Design Contest” collected 2 392 videos and 20 412 entries respectively. A total of more than 60 000 people participated in these contests. The Video Clip Contest also created a world record, with the number of videos collected far exceeded the initial target of 1 120 videos, which was set to support the World Children’s Day on November 20. During the ceremony, the guests voted for the top three winners of the two competitions via the electronic voting system, while the officiating guests presented awards to the winners.

The Police Band, the Police Children’s Choir, and kindergarten and primary school students gave performances such as musical instrument playing, singing, jumping jacks and a lion dance at the ceremony. The mascots of the Fire Services Department and the Correctional Services Department also staged a drama with the campaign mascots.

The Commissioner expressed gratitude to various sectors for their support to the campaign, including sponsors, supporting organisations, the public, Force members, disciplined services and uniformed groups.
