The 7th China Digital Forensics Competition, also known as the Meiya Cup, was held in Xiamen, China from November 12 to 14. Since 2015, the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) and the Department of Computer Science of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) have been invited as judges and responsible for the design and preparation of questions for the competition.
In March this year, CSTCB and HKU signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance cooperation on research and talent development, and the Meiya Cup is one of the talent development collaborations. CSTCB officers and a group of HKU doctoral students spent two months to prepare the relevant forensics images and formulate questions for the competition.
The Meiya Cup aims at facilitating the talent development of digital forensics professionals in China, enhancing the capabilities and levelling up the standard of digital forensic examination, as well as promoting the development of digital technologies in crime detection. This year, over 700 teams with 2 000 participants joined the competition. The Meiya Cup is renowned as the top digital forensics competition in China. It brings together elites from different domains of digital forensics, including representatives from well-known police colleges, higher education institutions and digital forensics units.
This year, the simulated scenario of the competition involved the infiltration and system attack targeting a multinational construction company, theft of personal data and money laundering activities involving the use of fintech and cryptocurrency. Participants were required to collect the relevant digital evidence and reconstruct the cyber footprint of the case.
CSTCB has been invited to prepare questions and serve as judges for the Meiya Cup for seven consecutive years, showing the Force’s leading position in the field of digital forensics. CSTCB will continue its dedicated efforts to promote the development of digital forensics.
