100 mentees of Leadership Institute on Narcotics (L.I.O.N.) in August received second round of training which covered team management, communication skills, presentation and promotion techniques and skills to deal with the media. They also ventured challenges and experienced offshore survival to train their determination and enhance their team spirit. After completing the training, the mentees will put what they have learned into practice by organising anti-drug activities in 20 secondary schools between September and November, and hold anti-drug exhibitions in November to promote anti-drug messages among the public.

Team-building training

The mentees attended the team-building training workshop held at the Police Officer Club (POC) on August 13. To experience team-spirit through activities, they worked together hand in hand to produce a mosaic of “Leadership Institute On Narcotics” with nearly 2000 dominoes. After the workshop, an experienced director from the financial sector Mr Man Chin-wing taught the mentees how they could manage a team effectively and avoid communication traps. They also learned team management modes and communication techniques for handling conflicts. Real case studies were discussed during the workshop to enhance their problem solving skills.

Skill sharing on media publicity and speaking

Dr Lee Ka Man, Head of Department of Journalism and Communication of Hong Kong Shue Yan University, and Ms Tracy Fan, a trainer from an international brand, were invited to meet the mentees at POC on August 17. The speakers shared their experience in dealing with media interviews and techniques for upgrading publicity. The mentees were given chances to promote their anti-drug publicity programmes and exhibitions.

Leadership training camp

The mentees attended a leadership training camp on Cheung Chau on August 20 and 21. After completing missions with team spirit, they showed their talent in the performances during the campfire at night to express the gratitude to their teammates, mentors, trainers and officers of Narcotic Bureau. The mentees further demonstrated their team spirit and courage through overcoming high event challenges and in team battles.

Survival on the waves

L.I.O.N. led the mentees to go on a one-day adventure on September 3. They learned survival skills comprising navigation, first aid, outdoor cooking and knotting. They built their bamboo rafts afterwards to accomplish various missions at sea.

Recruitment for the second cohort of L.I.O.N.

L.I.O.N. hopes to nurture mentees into young anti-drug leaders who would adopt an innovative way to introduce drug-free culture onto campuses and further promote it to every corner of the society. Between September and November, they will publicise anti-drug messages on campus and in the community.

The new cohort is now recruiting mentees. A Mainland field trip will be added next year. Visits to high-tech industries in the Mainland will be arranged for the mentees to understand the national anti-drug strategies. Mentees with outstanding performance may even be granted scholarship and opportunity for overseas exchange. Secondary school students and undergraduates who are interested in joining the programme can make online application by October 31.
