Force Search Unit (FSU) has been established for 30 years since 1992. Being one of the counter-terrorism units, FSU is responsible for conducting defensive search and manning security screening in major events, retrieving evidence at crime scenes and offering professional search advice, etc. With over 400 cadre members at present, it is the largest Volunteer Secondary Duty Cadre in the Force.
Since its inception, FSU has been involved in various major security operations, including the Handover Ceremony of Hong Kong in 1997, World Trade Organization Hong Kong Ministerial Conference in 2005, 2008 Olympics and Paralympics Equestrian Events, visits of Central People’s Government (CPG) leaders during anniversaries of the Establishment of the HKSAR and visits of other international dignitaries.
Amidst the severe challenges faced by Hong Kong over the past few years, FSU, being a member of the Force, has been serving the Hong Kong community and the Force bravely and steadfastly. In Operation TIDERIDER, FSU set up water-filled barriers at various locations across the territory and took part in crime scene search operations involving improvised explosive devices and ammunition to retrieve crucial evidence, with a view to protecting the life and property of the citizens and police officers. During the pandemic, FSU participated in Operation PINETOWER to set up water-filled barriers at a number of community isolation facilities in the territory to separate isolated zones from other areas for preventing cross-infection. This year marked the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR, FSU carried out defensive search and security screening both inside and in the vicinity of the venues to ensure the safety of the CPG leader’s visit.
In recent years, FSU has continuously upgraded its human resources, software and hardware equipment. New technology, such as drones, underwater drones and under-vehicle inspection system, has been explored to improve efficiency and ensuring the safety of members. In 2014, behaviour observation technique was introduced to FSU cadre members, and has been extended to other Police frontline units as an additional layer of security measures countering terrorist threat. Over these years, FSU has organised various courses for local, Mainland and overseas law enforcement agencies, including the Defensive Search and Venue Security Course to the Public Security Bureau of PRC in Hohhot, Wuhan and Sichuan cities.
FSU will continue to strike for excellence, adapt to changes and get prepared for various counter-terrorism search operations. To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of the FSU, its emblem has been changed to a Chinese dragon pattern representing letter "S" for the abbreviation of FSU. The change intends to display a new image to the public and highlight a new journey of FSU.
