A group of students and teaching staff from the School of Communication of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) visited the Police Headquarters to exchange views with officers of the Public Relations (PR) Wing on November 17. Chief Superintendent of PR Wing Tsang Shuk-yin led officers to introduce the work of the Community Relations Bureau, the Media Liaison and Support Bureau, and the Information and Publicity Bureau. They also presented the Force’s public relations strategies, the difficulties and challenges faced by the Force under the new media ecology as well as how digital technology was adopted to detect inaccurate commentaries and rebut false information promptly through online platforms. Students were also given the opportunities to experience media briefing and live-broadcasting on social media. Both the Police and HKBU students took the opportunity to deepen mutual understanding and analyse the challenges facing the Force.
Furthermore, PR Wing kicked off the first sharing session of a professional seminar series on new communication ideas on December 7 to enhance officers’ professional knowledge on related topics. Associate Director of HKBU Fact Check, Dr Bess Wang, was invited to share with the staff of PR Wing her experience on combatting false news. Dr Wang talked about misinformation and disinformation, and ways to increase the public’s media literacy. The seminar enabled officers to gain a better understanding about fact-checking and the challenges encountered, thereby strengthening officer’s professional knowledge and PR capability.
