To enhance the counter-terrorism (CT) awareness, knowledge and capability of officers, the Security Wing (SW) invited Professor Kumar Ramakrishna of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore to chair a CT seminar on “Latest terrorism and extremism trends in Asia and the need for a whole-of-society response” at the Police Headquarters on October 19. Professor Ramakrishna is the Dean of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) as well as Professor of National Security Studies and Provost’s Chair in National Security Studies of NTU. Co-organised by the Police College, the seminar attracted over 130 officers from the Force and member departments of the Counter Terrorism Emergency Co-ordination Team (CTECT).

Professor Ramakrishna presented an expert analysis on the recent developments in terrorism and extremism, and highlighted the process of radicalisation and the threats from lone wolf and insiders. He emphasised the importance of a comprehensive societal response which could boost the effectiveness of CT efforts of the law enforcement agencies.

Moreover, a two-day CT Foundation Course was held between October 18 and 19 for officers to enhance their CT knowledge and awareness of current global and domestic terrorist threats. 29 inspectorate officers or equivalents from different major formations and member departments of CTECT enrolled the course. SW will organise the first CT Advanced Course in November to further strengthen the officers’ CT knowledge.
