The Crime Prevention Bureau (CPB) held a liaison meeting with the retail industry on July 12 to strengthen co-operation in addressing the upsurge in shoplifting cases. In his opening remarks, Acting Chief Superintendent (Crime Support) Kong Wing-cheung thanked the attending representatives for their support and highlighted the importance of implementing the latest security systems in addition to hiring sufficient staff for combatting shoplifting effectively.


CPB officers analysed the latest figures, trend and modus operandi of shoplifting, as well as sharing crime prevention advice and good practices adopted by the industry. Police Clinical Psychologist (CLINPSY) Fung Ho-kin provided insights into the mentality of shoplifters, and how the retail industry could put up anti-shop theft posters and stickers to highlight the importance of law-abiding. Crime officers from Wong Tai Sin District shared a case on neutralising a shoplifting syndicate successfully. The participants responded positively to the meeting and expressed their commitment to making concerted efforts alongside the Force to tackle crime.


At the press interview held after the meeting, Chief Inspector (Training and Support) of CPB Choi Wing-yuk, CLINPSY Fung Ho-kin and Social Worker from SideBySide Mr Ip Chi-wai explained the factors of shoplifting cases and showed different security devices for prevention of shop theft to enhance the public and retail trade’s understanding of shoplifting.
