The Hong Kong Police Volunteer Services Corps (PVSC) comprises many volunteer teams joined and supported by Force officers and civilian staff enthusiastic about giving back to the society. Station Sergeant (SSGT) of the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) of New Territories North (NTN), Mike, has been a PVSC volunteer for 19 years, during which he applies his expertise to serve different walks of life outside policing work.

Mike, who joined the Force in 1994, was stationed in Airport Security Unit and Special Duties Unit (SDU). In 2005, a colleague invited him to join the Police Rainbow Volunteer Group and he accepted right away with no hesitation. “The SDU trains hard, and I want to relax during my vacation. However, with my active personality, I want to spend my spare time on something meaningful so I agreed to start volunteering.”

Mike still remembers that he started off with flag-selling. As simple as it may seem, the positivity and satisfaction he gained from helping others drove him to dedicate to voluntary work in the next two decades. As he has been influenced and taught by his father, who is in the renovation industry, basic repairs and painting work for the dilapidated homes of the elderly are naturally no difficulty for Mike. With the physical strength of an SDU officer, Mike sometimes delivers for charity organisations bags of rice to the disabled elderly who live in tenement buildings. He can effortlessly carry two bags of 5kg rice in each hand and walk up a dozen flights of stairs.

Mike also applies his policing expertise in volunteering. Being the trainer of the fighting dogs in SDU, he furthered his dog training study in the Netherlands and obtained relevant trainer qualifications. In 2020, he participated in a special mission in the capacity of an Animal Watchers Programme Ambassador and a trainer of companion dogs to teach dog leading techniques to students. Mike recalls, “The social sentiment towards police officers then was not all welcoming and was fogged by misunderstanding. Through dog training, the students could develop a deeper understanding of policing work. They gradually softened their attitude and were willing to open up, clearing the air eventually.”

Mike also contributes his rich experience in physical training to voluntary work. He serves as a physical trainer in the youth boxing class organised by Operation Breakthrough, a police volunteering team helping youth at risk. By setting example through sports, he instils in the students the importance of discipline and positive values.

This multifaceted volunteer says that his motivation to dedicate his spare time to serving the society in all these years is the service target’s smile. “I always bring my son to participate in social services. Voluntary work not only gives me more opportunities to connect with different ages and social strata, but also strengthens the bond between me and my son by jointly experiencing and spreading the positive spirit of ‘giving is better than receiving’.”

Established in 2004, PVSC’s diversified service ranges from visiting singleton elderly, organising youth activities, supporting logistics of large-scale events and crowd management (e.g. Hong Kong Marathon, Trailwalker) etc.
