With his keen acumen and professionalism of a police officer, Police Constable of District Investigation Team of Kwun Tong District Jack Yang saved a life with his colleagues speedily in a suicide attempt case in May this year.

A stone-faced young man walked into the report room of Kwun Tong Police Station (KTPS) at about 6pm that day and informed the duty officer, “Please tell Yang Sir that he need not investigate my case anymore as I will burn charcoal later.” Before the officer could take any action, the man already dashed out of the report room and disappeared.

Given the conscious mind and the serious tone of the man, the duty officer realised the gravity of the incident and swiftly found the on-duty Jack, whose surname is also Yang, after checking the records. With his excellent memory, Jack quickly recognised the man from the CCTV footage, who was the victim of a theft case with whom he had met eight months ago. The man was the proprietor of a company who had reported that nearly one million dollars had been embezzled by his employee.

Although the identity of the man had been verified, it was still difficult to locate his whereabouts against the clock. Jack and his colleagues immediately rushed to the address reported by the man. They kept knocking on the door but no one responded. They then tried to contact the subject’s family members living with him through the management office of the building, but to no avail. They then heard a faint sound inside. Jack recalled, “We realised that someone was inside the flat and the situation was critical. So we decided to break down the door.”

While Jack was about to break down the door, the man’s family member arrived. Opening the door, they found the man burning charcoal to commit suicide in the room. He survived after being sent to hospital for treatment. The man later revealed that his company closed down after the theft and he had a monetary dispute with his family on the day of the incident. His tremendous despair drove him to attempt to end his life. When passing by KTPS, he suddenly thought of his case which was still under investigation. The idea of going into the report room to close the file came to his mind, which unexpectedly resulted in the rescue. Jack and his colleagues saved the man within an hour. Jack said, “The last thing I wanted was being a step late and failing to save a life. Luckily it’s a happy ending.”

Jack believed that the positive conclusion of the case relied on full co-operation of the colleagues in the report room. “Everyone remained steadfast in their duties and followed up the case thoroughly. Otherwise it would be a tragedy. This successful rescue embodies the professional spirit of the Force, ‘Serving Hong Kong with Honour, Duty and Loyalty’.”
