Preparation for three-runway system
To prepare for full commissioning of the Three-runway System of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on November 28, the Airport District (APTDIST), along with around 500 officers from relevant units, including the F Company of Police Tactical Unit of New Territories South, Key Points and Search Division, Airport Authority and Aviation Security Company Limited, conducted a comprehensive security sweeping in the centre runway and surrounding facilities to eliminate all restricted and dangerous items for ensuring integrity of the runway.
Aircraft Crash and Rescue Exercise
APTDIST and New Territories South (NTS) participated in the Annual Aircraft Crash and Rescue Exercise at HKIA on October 15 to prepare for the re-opening of the centre runway. The exercise, which was coordinated by the Airport Authority, aimed to enhance collaboration among airport stakeholders, government departments and relevant agencies for improving the effectiveness of responses to aircraft accidents.
The exercise simulated a scenario where a departing passenger aircraft experienced a malfunction in its front landing gear during takeoff from the centre runway. The fuselage and fire of the aircraft resulted in injuries to some passengers and crew members. Officers from APTDIST and NTS immediately activated emergency response measures in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Department, Fire Services Department, Auxiliary Medical Service, Hospital Authority and Home Affairs Department, swiftly sealing off the scene and initiating rescue operations. The rescue teams established emergency vehicle access routes, casualty collection points and triage stations on-site to effectively provide first aid and medical assessment for the injured. Various formations also worked together to manage the reception of passengers and their relatives, investigations and media relations.
