Marine (MAR), together with the Fire Services Department (FSD), Marine Department and Government Flying Service, conducted an inter-departmental major maritime incident exercise codenamed FLIGHTMASS 2024 off Centre Island, Tolo Harbour on October 30 to strengthen the officers’ response and cooperation abilities for handling major maritime incidents.

The exercise simulated a passenger ferry striking a submerged object due to inclement weather, resulting in water entering the vessel and multiple injuries on board. Strong gusts also caused several canoeists to go overboard and get lost. During the exercise, MAR demonstrated its shallow water rescue and beaching capabilities with the jet ski. With assistance of the FSD drone team, the missing canoeists were located. All the injured and affected persons were conveyed to Marine North Division for casualty handling and triage processing by the Emergency Unit of New Territories South, Ma On Shan Division and medical personnel.
