The Force was awarded the Special Achievement in Geographic Information System Award 2024 by the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) on October 24 in recognition of the Force’s innovative concept in providing vital rescue information to help emergency units make instantaneous and well-informed decisions. Deputy Commissioner (Management) Chan Joon-sun and Director of Management Services (DMS) Lui Kam-ho both felt honoured that the Information Systems Wing triumphed another award.
R-map of the Force stood out as one of 197 solutions from more than 100 000 GIS application solutions worldwide that deserved commendation. The Hong Kong Police Force and Austrian criminal intelligence agency were the two agencies awarded under the law enforcement agency (outside the United States) category.
ESRI is the world’s largest provider of geographic information system (GIS) technology. GIS technology is employed worldwide and by different departments across the Hong Kong government, including Lands Department’s 3D Digital Map and Urban Renewal Authority’s Urban Renewal Information System. Every year, the ESRI review committee selects organisations that have outstanding performance in applying GIS from users worldwide.
