The opening ceremony for the reprovisioned Chung Ying Street Checkpoint in Sha Tau Kok was held on December 23, 2024. Chief Secretary for Administration Mr Chan Kwok-ki, Secretary for Security Mr Tang Ping-keung and Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Chow Yat-ming, together with other senior government officials and community dignitaries, officiated at the ceremony. Advanced facial recognition technology co-designed by the Border District and the Immigration Department has been introduced at the reprovisioned checkpoint. The innovative system enables residents and workers at Chung Ying Street to access the area via the “contactless channels”, thereby eliminating the need to halt and present their Closed Area Permit. This technological advancement not only facilitates the flow of pedestrian traffic and increases the processing capacity of the checkpoint, but also aligns with future initiatives to open Chung Ying Street for tourism.
