In an effort to further enhance the traffic management efficiency in Kwun Tong, the Smart Traffic Management System (STMS), jointly developed by Kwun Tong District (KTDIST) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), was officially launched on March 5. Regional Commander of Kowloon East Dr Law Yuet-wing, Dean of Engineering of HKUST Prof Lo Hong-kam, Chairman of Traffic and Transport Committee of Kwun Tong District Council Mr Kan Ming-tung and District Commander of KTDIST Chin Tsang-lo officiated at the ceremony.
The system is a sophisticated AI-based system and consists of three sub-sets. They are the Data Collection System, Data Analytics and Processing System and Information and Notification System respectively. The system operates round the clock to collect traffic data, monitors the traffic situation of the area such as traffic incidents and illegal parking, and provides timely and targeted recommendations to the command centres, allowing the District and officers of the Transport Department to deploy resources and manpower effectively.
Approximately 70% of the Kwun Tong business area, including nine streets and 13 sets of traffic lights, is under the system’s coverage, supplemented by high-mounted real-time monitoring cameras at 11 locations in the area. In addition, QR codes are in place at the locations for the public to scan so as to acquire further details and information of the Smart Traffic project. The system will officially come into service in the second half of this year. The District will conduct ongoing review of the system to improve the traffic condition in the District.
