Commendations for fraud busters

Two Commercial Crime Bureau officers have received Commanding Officer's Commendations for their top job in smashing a complex and serious fraud case.

Deceit detectives: DSIP Iain Johnston and PC Wong Kin-man
Detective Senior Inspector Iain Johnston and Police Constable Wong Kin-man were hailed for their role in exposing the US$23 million case which was bringing financial ruin to many people.

The managing director of a well established trading firm which imported dried salted fish from Bangladesh, forged documents which were said to prove goods had been delivered to Chittagong. They had not, and several Bangladeshi victims of the culprit's rip-offs filed complaints with Hong Kong authorities.

Upwards of 200 families in Bangladesh lost their livelihoods as a result of the culprit's actions which also struck a blow to the confidence of overseas companies in Hong Kong as a safe business centre.

By their excellent work in bringing about a successful prosecution in the face of enormous difficulties, Mr Johnston and his team showed Hong Kong authorities did not tolerate fraud and the standards of policing here were of the highest order.

The victims showed high appreciation for the work of the Hong Kong Police.

A District Court judge also complimented Mr Johnston and Mr Wong for their meticulous investigation and thorough preparation for the trial which required vast volumes of documents. The compliments were echoed by the Prosecution Counsel.

The culprit was sentenced to two-and-a-half years jail.
