Big hearts raise big funds for special athletes Big-hearted police joggers have raised almost $600,000 to help send Hong Kong athletes to the 1999-2000 Special Olympics World Summer Games in the United States. More than 270 officers participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run on the sunny Sunday morning of May 30. They were part of the 1,500 runners from the six disciplined services departments who participated in the jog, which set off from the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront near the Cultural Centre's piazza. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Information Systems) Peter Halliday carried the torch to lead the police runners. A total of $1.2 million was raised from the run with the Force topping the score sheet of fund raisers, with a walloping $582,000. The top three fund raisers within the Force, Information Services Wing, Police Training School and Commercial Crime Bureau, were each presented with a trophy. The event was officiated by Secretary for Security Regina Ip. Director of Personel and Training Leung Fung-shun was presented with a souvenir by run organisers.
