Forty thanked for alertness and bravery A courageous young boy and housewife who stood up to thieves and conmen were commended for their bravery on June 23. They were among the 40 civic-minded people who received certificates at the latest Good Citizen Award Presentation Ceremony held at Plaza Hollywood in Diamond Hill.
They thanked the 40 recipients for their outstanding courage, alertness and resourcefulness in fighting crime which highlighted the extensive support and co-operation Police received from the public in maintaining law and order. "They have set a good example to the public and are well-deserving of the Good Citizen Award," Professor Shek said. The recipients ranged in age from 12 to 63, with the youngest Wong Sai-ho being commended for stopping the theft of a bicycle. On October 6 last year he saw a boy stealing the bike, and Sai-ho told his friends to keep an eye on the culprit while he went and called Police. The thief was arrested. Another case involved housewife So Ma-le who helped Police arrest a swindler in connection with a street deception. On December 7 last year Madam So was approached by two men to buy and re-sell electronic components for a profit. She noticed their methods were similar to those used by fraud syndicates and pretended to comply. When one of the conmen accompanied her to the bank to withdraw cash she signalled a teller to call the Police. The man was quickly arrested. Professor Shek said the award scheme was proving more and more successful in raising crime awareness as more people were taking the initiative to assist Police in reporting crime and arresting culprits.
Since the scheme was launched 26 years ago, a total of 2,745 citizens have been presented with the award. Held twice a year, the award ceremony is put together by the Police Public Relations Branch and the General Chamber of Commerce.
