Use face shields when conducting CPR It is always possible for an officer to carry out Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation on cardiac arrest victims in relative safety. Acting Chief Inspector of Training Wing Stephen Ma said according to medical research, although direct mouth-to-mouth resuscitation may bring a disease transmission risk, the possibility of infection is quite low. "Research also pointed out that a novel way to ensure protection of the rescuer and proper conduction of CPR is to use an airway filter," Mr Ma said. The device functions as a protective barrier and should be used to eliminate the risk of infections and increase the confidence of officers to conduct CPR.
It consists of a plastic sheet with a circular bacteria filter through which a rescuer can carry out conventional CPR techniques. "The filter is a proven effective barrier against bacteria, body fluids and respiratory droplets," Mr Ma said. "The device is convenient, reliable and sealed in a foil packet for hygiene and long storage. "All frontline officers should carry the device while on duty." Divisional Support Sergeants can contact Mr Lam Wah-sang of Police Stores at 2856-0210 to collect the face shields. |
