Choir thrills the Lion City

The Hong Kong Police Choir won over the hearts of Singaporeans last month through a series of stellar performances as part of the Singapore Arts Festival and the Singapore Police Week.

The nine-day trip was a hectic round of rehearsals and performances with little time for holiday making.

The choir, made up of serving officers, Auxiliaries, civilians and retired officers, performed at Plaza Singapura, one of the Singapore's largest shopping malls, the open-air nightspot Clarke Quay, and the Singapore Police Week Carnival at the Singapore Police Training Command, leaving the audiences crying out for more.

A highlight was the moonlit performance before an audience of community figures on the Senior Officers' Mess lawn, which included Minister of State for Home Affairs and Law Dr Ho Peng-kee who chatted with the ensemble after the performance.

The Choir was accompanied by the Singapore Police Band and Band Pipers for many of the shows.

Choir Deputy Chairman Chief Inspector Rita Leung of Information Systems Wing said the amalgamation of the ensembles required a lot of rehearsal work which ultimately paid off in top-notch performances.

"I think it is fair to say the Choir performed better than it had ever done. "We spent many hours integrating the sound of the Choir with those of the bands and playing around with the sound system. The ultimate effect was great - we sang some difficult songs which brought the best out of the Choir."

Ms Leung said the Choir was complimented by multiple calls for encores by the audiences.

Senior Police Communications Officer Peggy Kwok said: "Singing to distinguished audiences under the moonlight in truly tropical settings was a very moving experience for me personally.

"The choir came to be quite well known throughout Singapore by the end of the visit. We projected, I believe, a very positive image of the Hong Kong Police and indeed Hong Kong as a whole."

Members of the Choir Committee also paid a visit to Singapore's Commissioner of Police Khoo Boon Hui and other senior officers, presenting them with a momento.

Despite the hectic trip the members did finally manage to find a little time to visit the City State's Night Safari Park for a bit of fun.
