File fatigue a thing of the past

Officers are having to sift through a lot less files thanks to an informative new webpage set up by Support Wing.

The page, on-line for about two months, offers legal advice, information on data privacy, policy guidelines, training notes and the latest Headquarters Orders.

Developed by the Force Data and Access to Information Co-ordinator, Chief Inspector Kieran Wright, the site is a fast and convenient source of knowledge and news.

"Offering policy guidelines and legal advice through the Internet is far more superior than going through circulars which get filed and put away, and can be hard to find when you need them," Mr Wright said.

CIP Kieran Wright explains the benefits of the new website
"Saving a copy on-line means officers can access it anytime they want. If they are looking for such information, officers can go to the website and see whether or not it has been issued.

"If not, I can be contacted and the information can be sought, distributed and posted on the website where it can then remain archived."

Mr Wright said the site was particularly useful for Divisional Chief Inspectors responsible for administration, privacy, legal and policy issues, and make up about 80 per cent of the co-ordinator's inquiries.

Issues raised ranged from disclosure of witness criminal convictions to the release of staff details to staff associations.

The site is constantly updated and features an archive of the issues raised so far.

"I update the site regularly myself and it is then posted on to the server.

The site also has links to relevant external pages such as that of the Privacy Commissioner for Personnel Data, and gives a lot of other information also," Mr Wright said.

You can access the bilingual site through the link on the Police Intranet homepage.
