Police bands steal the Kunming Expo show

Performances by the Police Silver and Pipe Bands drew large crowds of spectators during the Hong Kong Week of the 1999 International Horticultural Exposition in Kunming earlier this month.

The 52-member troupe, led by the Director of Music Philip Ng, left for the south-west Chinese city right after participating in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's second anniversary celebrations on July 1.

The Bands played five shows a day throughout the seven-day event, treating audiences to some 60 Chinese musical works while Police Constables Chau Man-yin and Chiu Yan-pak, two of the Force's best singers, crooned the crowd with a handful of Hong Kong pop songs.

Thrilled audiences scrambled for photos with the band members who also performed a spontaneous rendition of the Bridal March for an Expo staff member soon to tie the knot.

Members said the Expo was a definite plus in promoting the Force's image and Mr Ng shared their joy saying he was ecstatic the Bands were voted the most popular and disciplined performing troupe. The Hong Kong Tourist Association also sent them a letter expressing their gratitude for the Bands' outstanding Expo performances.
