St George to the rescue

Sampan saviour: SSGT Shek points out the location where he saved a drowning woman in Sai Kung

A woman drowning off Sai Kung was rescued by Station Sergeant George Shek of MTR District on September 21.

A Sai Kung resident off duty at the time, SSGT Shek saw a crowd gathering at the waterfront only to find out the woman was drowning. He jumped into the water and dragged her to the safety of a nearby vessel, and they were hauled out of the water by other police officers.

The woman, in her 30s, was sent to hospital for treatment and it was later found she wanted to take her own life because of love affairs.

A fisherman's son, SSGT Shek has lived in Sai Kung all his life and is very familiar with the locality and, of course, is a natural in the water too.

"It was my first experience of saving a life in my 20 years in the Force and I really feel good about it," he said.
