Death leap thwarted by speedy PC

Police Constable Tsang Tak-yuen was extolled recently for his quick thinking in saving the life of a sick and suicidal elderly man.

The Patrol Sub-Unit Team One officer from Ngau Tau Kok Division, dashed to the ninth floor of a building in Garden Estate, Ngau Tau Kok, about 11 am on August 17, after hearing an elderly man was about to jump.

"He was perched precariously at the edge, saying he wanted to die and be spared from several chronic illnesses," PC Tsang recalled. "I joined a staff member of the estate management to talk him out of the idea but he just would not listen.

"His emotions seemed to be getting out of control and his frightening gestures made me dash forward to grab hold of him and bring him to safety." He was later sent to hospital.

Hung Cheuk Lau Mutual Aid Committee vice-chairman Cheng Shu-ming presented a banner to PC Tsang on September 17 in recognition of his bravery. He was also commended by Sau Mau Ping District Commander Lau Sik-tim.
