D OPS gives Y2K assurances
The Force will be at optimum readiness to handle all law and order events during the New Year period and any problems stemming from the year 2000 computer issue.
That's the message reiterated by Director of Operations Dick Lee Ming-kwai at a recent function where he assured the Force was fully prepared for any Y2K glitches which might impact law and order.
On September 29, Mr Lee told the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce all Force systems were now Y2K compliant after the completion of rectification work.
However, in case of a breakdown, the Force had undergone careful contingency planning and derived a set of measures to ensure adequate communications and provision of electricity, fuel and manpower for Police operations to continue during the festive period and other Y2K-sensitive dates.
Fallback telephone systems had also been established to ensure distress calls could be dealt with quickly and effectively. And point-to-point radios could be utilised at ground level without having to be relayed through computer-operated control centres or repeaters.
"Additional manpower will be maximised on the street and emergency channels of liaison have been established with the Fire Services Department to ensure effective communication," Mr Lee said.
