Getting serious on road spills

Several formations stepped up their road safety campaigns recently to reduce accidents and casualties.

A street-safety promotion for the elderly was held by Traffic Hong Kong Island from July to October with officers visiting numerous community centres and homes for the aged to spread awareness.

Vibrant luminous bags sporting road safety slogans were distributed to elderly pedestrians on September 14 across the Region, reminding them to cross roads safely and to help make them more visible to motorists.

An operation on September 13 and 14 targeted pedestrian offences at traffic blackspots, moving violations on expressways, especially by trucks and private buses, obstructions and seat belt offences.

A total of 384 Fixed Penalty Tickets and 91 summonses were issued, and 327 pedestrians and 158 drivers were cautioned for minor offences.

Meanwhile, Road Safety Section officers of Traffic New Territories South visited 66 homes for the aged throughout the Region between July and October to encourage road safety and to remind elderly pedestrians on the safe way to cross roads.

Also, Yau Tsim Mong's Traffic Safety Campaign kicked off on September 4, with bus parades passing through traffic blackspots to hand out leaflets on road safety to help continue the downward trend of road accidents in the area.
