All-set to tackle job market

Hong Kong's future: CP Eddie Hui chats with youths in the Pre-employment Training Programme

Scores of youths and their parents attended a tea party at the Police Training School on October 15 to share their experiences in the Pre-employment Training Programme.

They were joined by Commissioner of Police Eddie Hui Ki-on, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Training) Yip Kwok-keung, Police Training School Commandant Wong Pak-nin and other officers.

The 42 youths were the first batch of participants in the programme offered by the Force, one of its 40-plus organisers. It supports the Government's Youth Pre-employment Training Programme providing teenagers with job-related instruction to enhance their competitiveness in the job market.

Other organisers included government departments, volunteer groups and private companies. Participants also honed other areas such as interpersonal skills and computer knowledge, which helped boost their confidence and preparation for job hunting.

The Force's own programme will cater to about 720 youths in 24 training courses of 10 days each up to March 24 next year.

They will be trained in foot drills, physical education, leadership skills, team building, first aid, map reading and weapons handling.

The syllabus also includes lectures on government structure, the disciplined forces, common crimes and healthy lifestyles. Officers escort students to visit the elderly, the handicapped and orphans.

They will be offered workplace attachments in various formations, such as temporary receptionist, library and clerical assistant roles, to put what they have learned into practice.

Trainees receive accolades for programme completion and top performances. One participant, Liu See-hang, said: "To me, leadership training was the best part of the programme. This will definitely be a plus to my future work." Another, Lai Sze-yan, said: "The programme was full of adventures for me. I got full marks in physical tests! I've never been so confident of getting ahead and achieving my goals."
