Teamwork vital in helping Eastern kids

With over 100 schools and some 65,000 students, co-operation between the institutions and Police was vital in preventing youth crime in Eastern District.

This was stated by Eastern District Commander Hung Hak-wai at an anti-youth crime seminar held at North Point Police Station on October 8.

"We make tremendous efforts in maintaining close liaison with schoolmasters and outreaching social workers," Mr Hung said. Some 60 schoolmasters, teachers and representatives from parent-teacher associations were invited to the seminar to exchange views and explore solutions on youth problems. Mr Hung introduced a new Eastern District school information folder for all secondary schools featuring advice on youth services available from Police, the Social Welfare Department and other related agencies.

"Moreover, Police officers inform schoolmasters regularly of the latest juvenile crime statistics to enhance their understanding of youth crime trends. Talks on fighting youth crime, case studies and counselling services will also be provided upon the request of schools," he added.

Mr Hung said a multi-agency approach was also adopted in organising the nine-month Eastern District Optimistic View of Life Campaign. "Under the campaign, wholesome activities were organised with the Education Department, the SWD, the YMCA, police volunteers and Shue Yan College students, to help youths at risk stay away from crime," he said. A new strategy being considered is the establishment of a scout troop to provide wholesome activities for teenagers cautioned under the Superintendent's Discretion Scheme.

The District has already organised a scout leader course for police volunteers who have indicated their interest in joining scout activities and providing guidance to the troop in future.
