Body development on new track

Smooth run: Trainees put the new Police Training School running track through its paces

Recruits can now strengthen their resistance to injury thanks to the new cushioned running track at the Police Training School.

The track minimises the chance of injury among trainees with limited running experience and primes them for harder surfaces.

The course is now fully commissioned after initial construction in May, and is being used extensively by recruits as part of their training, and by continuing trainees.

At 400 metres, the two-lane track is standard athletics distance and runs along the circumference of the PTS cricket pitch. It also meets standards of construction set out by international athletics bodies.

Senior Physical Training Instructor Mark Sharp said the track allowed the process of bodily adaptation to running on harder surfaces to be progressive, gradual and safe.

"The surface is resilient yet cushioning, providing recruits with a nice change from running on just hard surfaces. It is very good for new recruits and continuing-training recruits who have not done much running before as it helps prevent impact injuries before bodily adaptation has occurred," Inspector Sharp said.

"The track is also great for those who have not run for a while and have to start running again for conditioning purposes."

He said the course comes in handy for youth programmes held at PTS, as its cushioning effect was perfect for bodily development of young adolescents. Right next to the PTS swimming pool and gym, the track's location also allowed for cross-training workouts. Despite being only two lanes, the track has already seen some races during Commandant PTS Sporting Trophy events.
