Officers net drowning man

Net brigaders: PCs Lam, Choi and Ng with crane operator Mr Cheung

Quick-thinking Hong Kong Island Emergency Unit officers recently saved an elderly man from drowning by commandeering a nearby crane and plucking him out of the harbour in its net.

Police Constables Lam Hoi-shuen, Choi Chiu-chun and Ng Tuen-chung were on patrol when they heard the man was drowning off the Whitty Street Goods Loading Bay.

PC Ng took out life-saving equipment from the EU vehicle and threw them towards two men in the harbour trying to save the victim. PC Choi jumped in to assist.

But it was impossible to heave the man out of the water as there were no steps and waves were heavy that day.

Luckily, PC Lam spotted a nearby crane fitted with a rope net and rushed to tell the operator to lower it into the harbour.

All four people were quickly snared by the net and brought to safety. The elderly man was rushed to hospital and soon recovered.

The three officers said the life-saving equipment in the EU vehicle was newly-issued and proved vital in the rescue.
