Y2K won't stop the party

With celebrations mostly being held during Year 2000-critical moments, Police will work to ensure the community as a whole stays unaffected by any Y2K-induced or other unforeseen incidents.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) Cheung Chi-shum said: "We have worked out contingency plans for crowd dispersal, applicable both as a result of accidents or Y2K-induced incidents. About 14,000 officers, including Auxiliary personnel, will be deployed to maintain order and direct traffic on New Year's Eve."

Mr Cheung reiterated that all Force computer systems were Y2K compliant and said he was confident operations would not be affected.

"Our internal and external communications will not be interrupted by Y2K-induced problems during the period. Fallback telephone systems have been installed to ensure calls for help can be dealt with quickly and effectively," he said. "On Y2K-sensitive dates, task forces and enhanced manning of Police control centres will be effected around the clock. There are measures in hand to ensure the availability of adequate communications and provision of electricity."
