Gutsy Force effort
succumbs to PLA power

The Police rugby team took on the might of their PLA counterparts for the first time on home turf recently in an excitement-filled match.

The Police Sports and Recreation Club was the venue for the December 4 battle which saw the agile visitors outdo the plucky locals 48 - 5.

The Hong Kong Rugby Football Union Plate Competition final was the first time the two sides had squared off on SAR soil. However, despite the home support, the visitors were the firm favourites being a first-division side while Police were a second division squad.

The PLA opened the points with a well-struck 35-metre penalty, continuing the scoring throughout the first half finishing up five tries and four conversions ahead with a 38-point advantage at half time.

Immediately into the second half they scored again, however the excellent scrumming of the experienced Police front row was beginning to tire the PLA pack. For much of the second half the Army boys were pressured to defend their try line and Police were very unlucky to have a try by Tobi Lothian disallowed.

The PLA managed one more breakaway try before the Force's hard work finally paid off when John Morgan bulldozed his way to the try line.

Not a single penalty for foul play by either side was given during the event and there was a great feeling of camaraderie throughout the match. After the game the winners were invited to the Sportsman's Bar for a hard-earned meal and drinks.
