Unveiling: DRC HKI Chung Hiu-pang and DC W Barry Griffin brighten up Western Police Station

Police Headquarters and numerous stations have taken on new hues thanks to the vibrant work of a group of budding young Picassos.

Some 26 paintings by Hong Kong Island school kids were chosen to adorn the exterior of PHQ and a selected police station in each of the Region's four Districts.

The works will be copied on to large murals for display on the stations' outer walls throughout the new-millennium period, up to the Lunar New Year. The winning mural of each District will also be painted on hoarding sealing off redevelopment works at PHQ.

The pieces were among 550 paintings submitted by 33 HKI secondary schools in November, in a competition to promote youth crime prevention. Each work carried messages under the theme of a crime-free youth for the new millennium, not only encouraging kids to steer clear of bad elements and lead a healthy lifestyle, but also the public.

Officiating at the announcement of the winning entries on December 26, HKI Deputy Regional Commander Chung Hiu-pang said the colourful competition was one of a multitude of initiatives Police were undertaking to help tackle youth crime.

"Other efforts devoted by HKI officers to youth crime prevention include regular meetings with school management, parents and teachers associations and other parties to enhance co-operation. Inter-school quiz competitions and sports were also held by Police to encourage healthy lifestyles," Mr Chung said.

He added the Region would continue initiating and co-ordinating anti-youth crime drives by further developing the multi-agency approach to involve a broader section of the community.
