Lion City officers graduate, lah!

Lion hearted: Singaporean officers put their new skills to the test on the Police Tactical Unit firing range

Two officers from the Singapore Police Force recently graduated from a Police Tactical Unit cadre course.

Assistant Superintendent Alex Teo Boon Keng and Senior Staff Sergeant Ng Sin Teik received certificates from PTU Headquarters Acting Commandant Kevin Woods on December 3 for successfully completing the course.

Led by Echo Company Commander Superintendent Duncan McCosh, the Singaporeans joined 50 core members of the Company for the four-week course. They received intensive training in a number of areas such as leadership and management, lecturing and briefing, basic internal security tactics, weapons handling, police procedures, and laws.

They subsequently shared a lot of their own knowledge and experience with their Echo comrades both saying they felt enriched by their time here. Mr Teo said: "This is my first time in Hong Kong and I am pretty much impressed by the hard-working local police officers. They are ready for the new millennium. We've been working and playing hard as a team and I've integrated into E Company."

Mr Ng had visited Hong Kong a couple of times previously, representing his city/state home in the annual dragon boat races. He said: "I can read Chinese and can understand about half of spoken Cantonese so there's no problem in communicating with local officers. What's even better is that the course we attended was mainly conducted in English."

A trainer himself in the Singapore Force, the experienced Mr Ng was liked by all his Echo peers.

Both Woman Inspector Salvior Mok Chung-man and Inspector William Wong Wang-yip were glad to have foreign officers in their class. IP Wong said: "Mr Ng and Mr Teo are excellent classmates and we've come to know more about the Singapore Police Force and their way of doing things."

PTU training is renowned throughout the region, attracting a number of overseas trainees from the likes of Macau, the Philippines and Brunei previously. Government Departments such as Correctional Services and Customs and Excise, also frequently send their officers to PTU for training.
