Anti-drug work lauded by Guangdong

NB CIP Fok Lok-sang shows the pennon of praise from Guangdong

Guangdong security officials presented the Force with a banner of praise for smashing three drug syndicates and seizing more than 1,600 kilograms of narcotics on the Mainland last year.

Thanking the Force for its assistance in neutralising the drug syndicates, the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Bureau presented a banner to Narcotics Bureau for its work during the year, reading: "Feats at this time that benefit the thousand years to come", a recent remark by President Jiang Zemin praising the work of Mainland anti-drug organisations.

And it's not just authorities across the border with whom NB has solid co-operation. It also worked closely with Australian police to seize some 100 kilograms of heroin and 20 kilograms of ice in four cases last year.

Co-operation with Japanese authorities resulted in the smashing of two drug syndicates and the seizure of 250 kilograms of ice.

Joint efforts with police in Canada also saw the seizure of 115 kilograms of heroin in two cases last year.

  • Narcotics Bureau have made a public appeal urging caution when dealing with money from unknown origins or strangers.

The plea came in the wake of the conviction of a 55-year-old man in the District Court on January 6 after he admitted four counts of money laundering.

He received remittances from Australia amounting to $1.1 million in 1995-96, which was believed to be the proceeds of drug trafficking.

He said the funds were received from someone he did not know, who claimed it was business profits remitted to evade tax.

The Bureau said people should be alert when accepting money, particularly from unfamiliar people or sources. It added that precautions, such as establishing the personal particulars and contact details of those asking them to deal with money, should be taken.
