Elderly escort for towering trio

Room service: Madam Ho Yuk gets a visit from her three favourite PCs

Three officers braved slippery and pitch-black conditions to carry an elderly woman up 15 flights of stairs after a fire in her Wan Chai residential building on December 5.

Police Constables Wong Kam-fai, Lam Kai-ting and Ling Wai-kit of Wan Chai Division's Patrol Sub-unit Team Two helped 80-year-old Ho Yuk back to her flat after a fire in the Hennessy Road building the night before.

"We managed to get her home by taking turns to carry her. It was totally dark because electricity had not yet been re-connected and it was slippery with water everywhere - conditions too difficult for an elderly person to get up the stairs," PC Wong said.

PC Lam added: "It was a real tough job. While one of us carried her on our backs, the other two had to hold a torch and carry her personal belongs. We had to be careful with each step so we would not fall."

After the marathon climb the officers were exhausted and Madam Ho was glad to be home, happy the three young PCs offered their assistance at a time when she was helpless.

The trio have visited her several times since, bringing along the odd-present to warm her heart.

The boys said: "By helping Madam Ho we realised there were many elderly people who need help and we should keep an eye on them. This is not just a job for police but for all in the community."

They were elected Wan Chai District Outstanding Policemen, receiving commendations on January 22.
