Last-second lurch snares historic Dowman for Naylor

Dandy Andy: Ag CIP Andy Naylor accepts the winner's trophy from DCP OPS Peter Wong Tsan-kwong

In the biggest competitive sporting event on the Force calendar, it was the Police Tactical Unit who stole the limelight once again in the Millennium Dowman Road Race in Sai Kung.

Acting Chief Inspector Andy Naylor ran a neck-to-neck race with his fellow PTU officer and fierce rival of late, Police Constable Ching Ying-wai, until the last few meters when he summoned enough energy to lurch over the finishing line just half a second ahead and only 20 seconds off the course's best. Record holder PC Wong Wing-kuen wasn't running due to injury.

A ladies' course record was broken however, with dynamo Chan Sui-yi of Central District just beating rival (and record holder) Flora Lee of the Police Training School in 52 minutes, six seconds (52'06"), knocking a gutsy five seconds off the old mark.

The long run: Ladies winner Chan Sui-yi

The oldest "G.O." trophy went to New Territories South Regional Commander Keith Braithwaite, who at 54, ran a very creditable time of 1 hour, 14'02". On a day that was overcast and cool at 19 degrees Celsius, nearly 1,000 runners completed the 12-kilometre road race within 90 minutes. There were only a couple of runners who required treatment for minor cramps at the end. A carnival atmosphere was evident throughout the day with 'special edition' T-shirts on sale, refreshments and a beaming Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Peter Wong Tsan-kwong handing out the major trophies.

He was supported by a coterie of Regional Commanders and other senior officers, including Police Sports Council Chairman Lionel Lam Kin who started the race.
