Selection exercises finding top new blood

Putting applicants to the test in the EU KE selection

A new batch of top officers have been chosen to join Emergency Unit Kowloon East after its latest selection exercise held on January 11.

Over the last year the EU KE has run four selection exercises for Junior Police Officers due to the large number applying for very limited vacancies. The last selection saw 40 applicants for a mere 10 spots. However, the process has proven effective, finding top officers in a fair and open way.

The selection lasts a day and comprises an interview, weapons tactics skills evaluation, practical assessment a written test and an observation exercise. All candidates' Records of Service are also examined and marked according to strict criteria.

During the selection the Units' Platoon Commanders are all actively involved in the assessment of each candidate, giving them a better impression of each applicant's personality and strengths.

EU KE Chief Inspector Mark Johnson said: "In EU we are in a fortunate position in that a lot of officers are keen to join due to our proactive role in answering emergency calls. Due to the large number of volunteers, we decided a more open and fair way of choosing officers was to hold a one-day selection course, based on the Unit's needs.

"This allows us to assess individual officers' ability and potential, thereby selecting the most appropriate ones for the Unit. Obviously some officers are disappointed when they are unsuccessful, but there is no bar to them trying again. The selection process is more open and has proved to be successful."

And it's not just JPO's, as last June five Inspectors attended a selection exercise for a new Platoon Inspector. Once an officer, JPO or IP, has passed selection he must attend a six-day Induction Course - the hard part.

The next selection exercise for EU KE will be held in April, for an Inspector and a number of Sergeants and Police Constables to fill vacancies arising in April to May.
