Tough action douses
illicit fireworks


About 160 kilograms of illegal fireworks were seized and 20 people arrested in operations over the Lunar New Year holiday.

The four-day break saw 31 cases of illegal possession or discharge of fireworks in a host of Divisions including Tsuen Wan, Castle Peak, Pat Heung, Sha Tin, Tsing Yi, Tai Po, Sheung Shui, Tsim Sha Tsui, Tin Shui Wai and Yuen Long.

Some 15 men and two women were arrested and released on bail, while another three men found discharging fireworks were summonsed.

Scores of fireworks seizures were also made in the run-up to the break with more than 10,000 kilograms confiscated across Hong Kong in the first three weeks of January, more than double the number of seizures for the whole of last year. Yuen Long District alone saw more than 4,300 kilograms of fireworks seized and 14 arrests in the run-up to the holiday.
