Dicky electrifies career development

First degree: PC Dicky Ng displays his hard-earned Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering

Police Constable Dicky Ng Siu-hong has charged up his Force career with the recent acquisition of a Bachelor's Degree (Hons) in Electrical Engineering.

The PC received the degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on December 17, which he hailed as the biggest prize so far in his 10-year learning endeavour.

The 36-year-old from the Planning and Development Branch's Police Stations Improvement Project Team said he was always an eager learner with a deep interest in electrical installations since his school days.

"I joined the Force at 20. But being a Form Five graduate, I soon realised I needed higher qualifications to develop my career in the Force. That made me determined to better equip myself," PC Ng said.

He soon enrolled in a part-time ordinary certificate course in electrical engineering offered by the Haking Wong Technical Institute.

"At the beginning, it was a very difficult move since I had been out of school for six to seven years and the shifts at work made evening classes nearly impossible. I couldn't have done it without the support from my commanders who were very flexible with my leave-taking so I could attend class."

He said his wife also played a vital role in helping him reach his academic goal.

PC Ng took on a higher-certificate course in electrical engineering in 1992 and won a distinction. With the boost in confidence he continued on for the degree course.

"The past 10 years of continued studies not only enriched me academically but my whole life as well. I came to know more about time management, logical thinking and analysis, and was able to gain unprecedented self-confidence."

And the studies are bound to prove essential in his existing post. "My work in the Police Stations Improvement Project Team often involves dealing with issues like air-conditioning, electricity and security systems installation in police premises. My professional training enables me to communicate effectively with contractors to contribute in designs and assist colleagues in understanding problems involved."

Being computer literate also allows him to assist in IT matters and present more graphic ideas. He advised young officers to take the initiative to learn and enhance themselves.
