New anti-triad troop graduate

Anti-triad operations are set for enhancement with the recent graduation of a new batch of experts.

A group of 25 officers ranked Sergeant to Chief Inspector, passed out of the Criminal Intelligence Bureau's Triad Expert Training Course on March 17.

The intensive three-week course was the last featuring CIP Peter Ip. It also had a host of guest lecturers including officers from the Organised Crime and Triad Bureau, the Department of Justice and Hong Kong University, and a magistrate also assisted in mock court exercises. The course was last run for locals in 1998.

DSIP David Wan said trainee selection was tough with almost 70 applicants for just a handful of places. He said most had criminal-investigation experience and recommendations from their commanding officers.

"They were officers volunteering to become triad experts and conduct many specialist tasks like deciphering jargon and handsigns. The experience will open opportunities for them to join Anti-triad Units, and allow for the coverage of natural wastage in the cadre." Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Yam Tat-wing, presented certificates to the graduates.
