Record pollution could not baulk some fine displays at this year's Police Athletics Championships at Wan Chai Sports Ground on March 28.
Competition was very keen with scores of staff battling it out amid roaring support from the great turnout of spectators. The day registered record pollution levels in Wan Chai and Central, and although no athletic records were broken several were narrowly-missed.
Fastest man was Airport Security Unit PC Tsang Ho-yin who ran the 100-metre event in 10.89 seconds. Fastest lady was WPC Kwok Yee-man of Security Wing who clocked the 100 metres in 13.57. The talented Kwok also won medals in four other events to take the Victrix Ludorum crown. PC Chan Man-for won two gold medals to take the Victor Ludorum trophy.
PC Ko Fuk-ming confirmed his place as distance runner of the year, taking gold in the 800, 1,500 and 5,000-metre veteran races. He also won the Carpe Diem Bowl for the best athlete over 35. For the Seniors's category it was super-fit Andy Gidley of Criminal Records Bureau who scored gold in the gruelling 5,000 and 10,000-metre races. Field events saw star PC Wong Chun-wing of Eastern District take gold in the long and triple jumps, while SIP Chris Irvine used his superb technique to win gold in the shot put and discus.
The coveted Specialist and Training Units Trophy went to the Police Tactical Unit who squeezed just two points ahead of the tough Airport District. SW picked up the Major Formation Trophy while the Minor Units trophy, for Districts and Divisions, went to plucky Eastern.
Acting Commissioner of Police Peter Wong Tsan-kwong presented the trophies with assistance from Police Sports Council Chairman Lionel Lam Kin and several Regional and major formation commanders.
