Eastern kids savour the scouts

Rousing reveille: Ag DC E Stuart McDouall blasts the Kudu horn

A group of Eastern youngsters have been safely diverted from a life of trouble for the path of community service by becoming the first troop members of the 1095th Eastern Optimistic Scout Group.

Organised by Eastern District and sponsored by the Eastern District Fight Crime Committee (EDFCC), the new group was formally established in a ceremony at the Police Officers' Club on May 13.

The 1095th Group was formed last month with Eastern officers recruiting scouts among the youths under the Superintendent's Discretion programme. Some 18 of them took the scout oath and were presented with a unique scarf donned in the Force colours.

The spectacular ceremony saw Acting Eastern District Commander Stuart McDouall sound the Kudu horn bringing in the flag party, comprised of volunteer scout leaders from the district, to a fanfare from the 221st Scout Group Band from Cape Collinson. Chief Commissioner of Scouts Hui Chiu-yin then inspected the scouts in formation, stopping to chat with the youngest member, aged 10.

Hong Kong Island Deputy Regional Commander Chung Hiu-pang and EDFCC Chairman Henry Wu King-cheung then conducted the eye-dotting ceremony before the traditional lion dance was performed by the 221st Scout Group to an audience of about 100 well-wishers.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Wu emphasised the need to face an increase in juvenile delinquency with positive and proactive training and counselling. Mr Hui added the practical education and opportunities offered by the scout movement were wholly compatible with the modern culture and expectations of today's youth. The new Group Scout flag was then presented to the 1095th Scouts.

Recognising the support and community service offered by the Scout Group's many benefactors, certificates were then presented to close the festivities.
