Catch the hues of the new Review

Another year's passed and what better record is there of the Force's top work over the last 12 months than the Hong Kong Police Review 1999, which is now available.

The 96-page, bilingual and full-colour document looks back on the Force's activities in the year that saw the world count down to a new millennium and to new policing challenges.

Keeping with the times, the report has taken on a smart contemporary look, offering detailed insight into the 1999 police year through vibrant photo galleries and informative text presented in a stylish modern layout.

The year was not only a busy one in terms of new initiatives, equipment, and for strengthening relations with Mainland and overseas authorities, but also for the challenges posed by the elements which saw officers risk all to save lives on many occasions, particularly during the direct hit of Typhoon York in September, and the China Airlines crash at Chek Lap Kok in August.

The year also saw the Force overcome the mammoth challenges of Y2K compliance, a smooth 2000 rollover and a safe and orderly New Year's Eve. In his Foreword, Commissioner Eddie Hui Ki-on hailed the Force's effective and professional response to the additional challenges posed in 1999, which he described as a particularly demanding and challenging year for Police, noting the continuing climate of economic uncertainty and social hardship resulting from the Asian financial crisis.

He said it had an inevitable effect on both the number and types of crimes committed, such as criminal intimidation related to debt-collecting malpractices and quick-cash crimes like pickpocketing and snatching. However, overall crime reports were below 1996 levels, proving our effective anti-crime strategy.
