PSC squash tour

Singas slingers: Police squash skipper Peter Barnes thanks the Singapore team

The Police Squash Club undertook its 10th overseas tour under the leadership of tour manager Peter Barnes, visiting Singapore and Thailand May 20 to 28.

Despite the loss of a player even before setting off, a replacement was found and the tour proceeded with a party of 15.

Opening match was against the Singapore Cricket Club where Police lost 10 - 5, despite good performances from Andy Phillips, Donnie Choy, Phillip Ko, Ian Nicholson and Yan Chin-keung (on his first tour) who all won, but others took time to adjust to the heat and lack of air-conditioning.

The second match was a battle with the Singapore Police, also sans air-con. Showcasing their toughest side, the Lion City boys won 14 - 1, with the only notable HK win going to Peter Barnes.

The third match was against the Tanglin Club where Police secured the only full win 12 - 3. Due to an evening start, American scoring was used to keep the games short and the best of three was played. Fred Tsui, Leung Chi-man, William Siu, Terrance Leung, Kenny Ip, Nelson Chiu and Albert Yuen (on his first tour) won their first matches.

On May 23 the squad flew to the Land of Smiles where the fourth match was played against the Royal Bangkok Sports Club (Polo Club). In an extremely close match the home team won 8 - 7. This result was remarkable considering some of the Polo Club players were either existing or ex-national players. Fred Tsui had to give a walkover due to injury sustained in the second game after winning the first. Bill Chan trying his very best, got his first and only win on the day.

The final match was against the British Club. Up against strong opposition, Police lost out 11 - 2. Donnie Choy won again and Connal Chan got his first win of the tour. A special mention must be made of Andy Phillips who, although losing 2 - 3, put up a strong and exciting fight with his opponent.

The team also found time to meet old squash friends on the tour and make many new ones. They thanked Peter Barnes for making the trip so successful.
