JPC kids head Down Under

Big goals: CE Tung Chee Hwa joins JPC members for table football as CP Eddie Hui looks on

Fourteen lucky youths are flying to Australia and New Zealand having beaten record entries in the Junior Police Call fight youth crime competition.

Some 80,000 entries were received in the competition open to primary, secondary and tertiary students, and, for the first time, family units. The contest encourages youths and parents to fight juvenile crime and reminds them of its consequences.

The winners met Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa and Commissioner Eddie Hui Ki-on at the Central JPC Clubhouse on July 21, where Mr Tung showed his penchant for soccer by playing a football table game with the kids after touring the club's facilities.

"Overseas visits not only enable one to have an eye-opening sightseeing opportunity and to learn the strengths of others, but it also shows people abroad the merits of Hong Kong," Mr Tung said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Management) Tsang Yam-pui also hosted a farewell lunch for the winners at the Police Officers' Club. He discussed ways of tackling juvenile crime and advised them to exchange views with their Aussie and Kiwi counterparts.

Meanwhile, the youths also received souvenirs of praise on July 23, at a fight crime show at Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

Champions Kong Cheuk-ho, Or Oi-yan, Leung Man-fai, as well as the family unit winners Ada Lee, Cherry Lee, Lee Wai-man and Lee Wai-chun, flew off for New Zealand and Australia on July 28, due to return on August 8. Other winners Chan Hin-lun, Tang Pak-sze, Lie Yuk-man, Wong Pong-ping, Lee Siu-yin, Kwok Ching-yee and Chow Ching-yan also joined the Australian trip with the champions on July 31.

They will represent Hong Kong as fight crime ambassadors.
