Trusty teamwork sees gunman subdued

PC Wong, SPC Ho and WSPC Or recall the frightening incident

When officers face extreme danger, apart from being resourceful, the only thing they can do is place absolute trust in their team mates. This is just what three Sham Shui Po Division Patrol Sub-unit Two officers did when they were forced to subdue a man carrying a loaded pistol in Lai Kok Estate on October 5.

Senior Police Constable Ho On, Woman SPC Or Lai-hing and PC Wong Yau-fai were on patrol for the first time as a team when they spotted the culprit acting suspiciously. Stopped for a search, he pulled a pistol-like object from a bag.

PC Wong drew his service revolver as a precautionary measure, while SPC Ho and WSPC Or struggled to disarm the culprit, the former having to wedge his index finger behind the trigger of the gun to stop it firing.

After a fierce struggle, the culprit was subdued and arrested. Forensic Firearms Examination Bureau officers later confirmed the PLO was a nine-millimetre self-loading pistol packed with six rounds of ammunition. The frightening experience has haunted the three since.

SPC Ho said: "There was no way for us to cover ourselves. I put my finger behind the trigger to stop him from hurting other people, but he still tried very hard to pull it. Although my finger got hurt, it was absolutely impossible for me to give up or my colleagues and people nearby might have been injured."

WSPC Or said her concern peaked when she saw SPC Ho's finger bleeding badly.

"Apart from encouraging him not to give up, I had to try my best to subdue the culprit. This is one of the most frightening scenes I have ever encountered since I joined the Force in 1966," she said.

PC Wong said: "He put up a fierce struggle and we were all thrown to the ground at one point. I am pleased we finally managed to stop the incident and prevent a tragedy thanks to our team spirit and intensive training."

SPC Ho had only joined the team several days before and it was the first time he was on patrol with PC Wong and WSPC Or.

"The incident has boosted our friendship and become an unforgettable memory shared by only three of us," he said.
