Mandarin skies in NTN

As the sun goes down in New Territories North Region, the dulcet Putonghua tones of its staff have been firing up.

The Police Chinese Culture Club, in conjunction with the Region, launched its See You at Dusk Putonghua classes in mid-September, to promote the dialect and improve its mastery among various ranks of officers, including civilians.

The classes provide NTN staff with more opportunity to speak and listen to the dialect through free chatting, reading aloud, singing, games and topical discussion.

Senior officers such as NTN Regional Commander Ng Wai-kit and Deputy RC Charles Wong Doon-yee, have mingled with the classes on different occasions.

"Since the return of Hong Kong to the Mainland there has been more and more opportunity to use Putonghua. I appeal to you all to work hard and support one another in learning the dialect," Mr Ng said.

Mr Wong added: "It is our aim that we succeed in this practical application to use what we have learned at work, or otherwise."

The classes meet fortnightly in the NTN Regional Headquarters and the NTN West Sector Operational Base (the former Tai Hing Police Station). Each class runs for 90 minutes, from 6 pm.

More than 40 students have signed up so far and more are being invited. Participants should be elementary-level and professional Putonghua teachers conduct tuition. Other NTN Region staff interested in joining can call 2666-4460 for enquiries.
