Cross-border vice conference

Road Safety Council Chairman and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Peter Wong Tsan-kwong helped launch the Road Safety Campaign 2000/2001 in Kowloon Park on October 15.

At the ceremony, the public were reminded of the importance of road safety through stall games, variety shows and other activities.

Mr Wong said Police would continue rigorous action against traffic offences such as tailgating, drink driving, dangerous driving, speeding and jaywalking. He said Police would boost co-operation with Government departments and related organisations to pass road safety messages to the public through various channels.

The Hong Kong Island Regional Traffic Day was held October 16 and 17, seeing 372 Fixed Penalty Tickets (FPT) and 61 summonses issued. More than 150 officers from Traffic HKI and Eastern, Wan Chai, Central and Western District Traffic Teams were deployed to black sites across the island.

Some 315 FPTs were issued for illegal parking and 57 for other traffic offences, with 228 pedestrians and 129 drivers cautioned for minor offences. Road safety pamphlets and leaflets were also distributed.

Some 2,243 traffic accidents involving casualties occurred on HKI roads in the first nine months of the year. Of those, 17.1 per cent and 77.2 per cent were attributed to the negligence of pedestrians and drivers respectively.

Meanwhile, 739 summonses and over 1,100 verbal warnings were issued during the New Territories North Region pedestrian and cycling safety fortnight. Mounted September 24 to October 7, the operation was aimed at reminding road users of traffic regulations and safe cycling.
