'Jet' Ching's Henry fling

The Police Tactical Unit Headquarters men's team overcame unseasonal humidity and slippery conditions to set a new record in the 2000 Henry Shield Relay Race, October 25.

Up against 35 men's teams, the PTU boys dominated the race with Andy Naylor, Poon Fuk-chiu and Wong Wing-kuen putting in a solid performance before Ching Ying-wai romped home in the final leg to help the team set a new record time of 47'05".

They also won the Specialist/Training Units trophy, with Director of Operations Dick Lee Ming-kwai presenting the coveted Henry Shield to them. Ching also recorded the fastest leg of 3.7 kilometre course at 11'20" eight seconds off the course record - his running style described by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Information Systems) Peter Halliday, as being ". . . like a low-flying jet-plane".

Fastest lady was PTU's Sean Ho Kit-ying, with a time of 15'21". She was also a member of the victorious PTU squad that won the overall ladies team trophy. Eastern District came second.

Despite a sunny, warm and humid afternoon, the competition was as keen as ever with parts of the course posing muddy and slippery hazards. However, many of the experienced teams took the hilly course in their stride. Veteran Ho Kam-fuk of the Border Catering Unit, now nearly 50 years old, turned in a stunning time of 12'34" - only a minute behind the fastest time of the day. Guest of Honour, Mr Lee, was accompanied by Hong Kong Island Regional Commander Eric Leung Chi-bun, Mr Halliday and PTU Deputy Commandant Kevin Woods.
